is set to release its follow-up full length album “Man Monster” this week. Reverb caught up with guitarist Tyler Breuer and lead vocalist Jacob Hansen as they were hard at work preparing the physical copies for mass delivery. The Knew will be performing not once, not twice, but thrice this weekend! Friday early evening will see an in-store show at from 5-7 p.m., and the will host the proper shows on Friday and Saturday at 9 p.m. You can purchase the new album .
What was the timetable like for “Man Monster”?
TB: “Pre-production started in 2011, however our producer, Chris Fogal, moved his studio midway through the recording. The studio moved from his house to a new studio on Colfax and Dahlia named Black in Bluhm.”
The new album sounds “larger” than your previous works with the inclusion of a horn section. Tell us what you guys did differently.
TB: “This time around we did include horns. David Thomas Bailey from FaceMan put together the arrangements for the horn section that includes Jacob Herold, Adam Bartczak and Cary Webb. We played through four amps and four guitars all the while adding sounds on top of drums. We got creative in the studio to make it bigger. One of the things we did is listen actively to other recordings that we loved from classical to rock to see what they did. In the end, we were willing to make it sound how like it did in our heads.”
How did the song crafting process shake out?
JH: “Everyone wrote their own piece and came together to talk about what we liked and disliked. We tried a lot of different things and went into the studio to see what worked what best. This album has a lot of more group vocals than previous releases.”
What kind of promotion are you doing for the album?
JH: “We have a few shows in September with These United States and the Neon Reverb festival in Las Vegas. We might jump back on the road with These United States in the fall depending on how things go. In October, we plan on touring Colorado with Jason Anderson (K Records) for a few dates.”
