Longmont City Councilman Brian Bagley will go to court Oct. 25 on misdemeanor charges of bringing a concealed .45-caliber Colt Defender into the Boulder County Justice Center.
The handgun was spotted in Bagley’s briefcase Aug. 31 by security after he put it on the courthouse’s conveyor belt. Bagley, a criminal-defense attorney, said he had left the weapon in there by accident.
“Every now and then, that definitely happens,” Boulder County sheriff’s spokesman Cmdr. Rick Brough said. “Either they pick up the wrong briefcase or the wrong purse, and they forget they put a gun in there.”
Colorado law allows someone to carry a concealed weapon while in their home, car or place of business but otherwise requires a concealed-carry permit for anyone who is not a law enforcement officer.
Bagley said someone had hacked into his family’s personal e-mail recently, and between that and some of the cases and issues he dealt with, “I thought it was a good idea to exercise my constitutional rights.”
