COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Prosecutors won’t be filing criminal charges against a teen accused of falsely saying she had found a baby in a trash bin in Colorado Springs.
The baby turned out to be the 17-year-old girl’s own newborn daughter.
Police say the teen’s claims prompted another person to call 911 to report the abandoned baby Wednesday. The teen had faced possible criminal charges of influencing a public official or false reporting, but prosecutors and police have decided the case would be better handled in the juvenile and civil court system.
Police determined the teen had been hiding her pregnancy from her family and claimed to have found the baby in a trash bin after she gave birth. Police say the baby was never in the trash and wasn’t harmed.
