It’s a competitive field, but are now the indiest band to ever be featured on “The Simpsons.” That’s quite a feat, considering that groups such as R.E.M., Sonic Youth and the White Stripes have all made their way onto the longest-running animated series in the U.S.
The Portland-based band, famous for multi-syllabic tales of , played the newly hired music teachers at Springfield Elementary in Sunday night’s episode.
It’s debatable, but the surliest “Simpsons” musical guest remains Johnny Cash, who played Homer’s spirit-guiding coyote in the season eight episode, “El Viaje Misterioso De Nuestro Jomer (The Mysterious Voyage of Homer).” That episode is, in essence, about Homer hallucinating after eating a special batch of chili. Man, “The Simpsons” used to be (and, as evidenced by this weeks episode, remains) awesome.
We’ll see how long the Decemberists hold their title. It could be a while, seeing as Sonic Youth held theirs for 16 years.
