PUEBLO, Colo.—Pueblo police have confirmed that a man shot and killed by a detective on New Year’s Day was the person who had wounded an officer earlier.

The Pueblo Chieftain ( ) reported that 21-year-old Christopher Tavaras of Colorado Springs died of a gunshot wound to the chest. Police chief Luis Velez said Wednesday that a .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun found nearby is believed to have belonged to Tavaras.

Velez said that the detective fired at him after he refused to follow an order to show his hands and appeared to be reaching for something.

Neither the detective nor the officer who was wounded earlier have been identified. Police expect the wounded officer to make a full recovery.
