After 11 seasons, “” is putting all of its eggs in the diva basket. Hiring three new judges, including pop stars and , has already resulted in drama for the reality singing competition, before it airs Jan. 16.
Last October, of an argument between the two during the pre-recorded audition phase of the show. In an , Carey spoke about having to hire extra security because she feared for her own safety.
She felt the argument resulted in an “unsafe work environment.”
“Anytime anybody’s reeling threats at somebody, you know, it’s not appropriate. I’m a professional. I’m not used to that type of environment,” Carey said in the interview.
Carey is reportedly being paid $18 million a season, a figure she won’t officially confirm.
At a recent Television Critics Association press conference, Fox president of alternative programming Mike Darnell said, in defense of why “Idol” still remains “the king of shows:” “Yes, there are too many of these shows on the air and they’re all taking each other down a little bit. But this is … the only one that makes stars and people keep coming back to it for that reason.”
Fights aside, he continued to say that the reason for the so-called “feuds” is all of the passion, and disagreements on the talent itself. “It’s not just the girls, it’s everybody,” he said.
“For all the drama, I hope it helps the show,” Carey told Walters. “I think it’s a classic, classy show and it didn’t need this.”
