HARTFORD, Conn. — Investigators have a theory that Adam Lanza’s interest in Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik might have led to the Dec. 14 massacre that left 20 children and six women dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

The theory is based in part on several news articles about Breivik that investigators found in one of Lanza’s home, according to law enforcement sources.

The sources emphasized that an interest in Breivik is just one theory.

Breivik set off bombs in downtown Oslo in July 2011 that killed eight people before moving to Utoya island, where he shot and killed 69 people, most of them teenagers attending a summer camp.

CBS News reported Monday that Lanza saw himself as being in competition with Breivik and targeted Sandy Hook Elementary because it was the “easiest target.”
