A 22-year-old man convicted of robbing two stores has been sentenced to 40 years and 3 months in prison.

He will also serve eight years of supervised release after the prison sentence.

According to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice, the indictment said Smith robbed a Criket Communication Store located on South Nevada Avenue in Colorado Springs on Nov. 16, 2010.

About a month earlier, on Oct. 11, 2010, Smith robbed a Burger King restaurant within Fort Carson base.

Smith used a gun in both crimes and shot a person in each location. The injuries were not life-threatening, and .

His girlfriend at the time, Pfc. Bianca M. Soto was investigated initially as helping Smith in the getaway, but she was later acquitted.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Colorado Springs Police Department an the Army Criminal Investigation at Fort Carson.
