DENVER—An advocacy group says the appointment of the first woman to command the Air Force Academy is significant, but more needs to be done to address the treatment of women in the military.

Air Force Maj. Gen Michelle Johnson has been chosen to be the next superintendent of the Air Force Academy in Colorado. Congress must first approve her promotion to lieutenant general, the rank required for the job.

She’s believed to be the second woman appointed to command a service academy, after Coast Guard Rear Adm. Sandra Stosz at the Coast Guard Academy.

Anu Bhagwati (AH-noo bahg-WAH-tee) of Service Women’s Action Network said Monday Johnson is well qualified for the job. But she says putting women into high-ranking positions won’t by itself address unequal treatment and sexual assault.
