
The Denver Post on Wednesday received first-place awards from the American Society of News Editors for its coverage of the Aurora theater shootings and for photographer Joe Amon’s work depicting the life of a heroin addict.
Reporter Michael Booth was a finalist in the category of non-deadline reporting for his .
In honoring The Post with the Distinguished Writing Award for Deadline News Reporting, judges cited the staff’s “detailed reporting and vivid writing that took readers inside the theater.”
Judges said the “writers sifted through a mountain of information to deliver fresh insights, telling the story in a complete and compelling manner.”
Of Amon, who received the organization’s Community Service Photojournalism Award, judges noted he “gained access to a story and subjects that are tough to find, let alone photograph. Amon brought to light the persistent problem of drug addiction with new information about heroin and its impact on Denver.”
ASNE, founded in 1922 as a nonprofit organization focusing on leadership development and journalism issues, works to promote fair, principled journalism and protect First Amendment rights.
The year’s contest drew 316 entries. Awards were given in nine categories.
