
The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal from former University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill in his effort to reclaim his job, a move that led university officials to declare, “The matter is now over.”
The justices did not comment in refusing to review a Colorado Supreme Court ruling in favor of the university.
David Lane, Churchill’s attorney, said the decision to not take the case is a blow to free speech.
“It’s disappointing from the perspective that the First Amendment has suffered as a result of this,” he said. “I am sorry that the regents have been given the green light to violate the Constitution any time they feel a need.”
Lane said Churchill is lecturing in Atlanta. He agreed that the case is now over.
