The Lincoln County Sheriff seized nine horses Saturday in the Hall Station area that had been abused and neglected, including a five-day-old foal.
Charges are pending against the owners of the horses, who may face nine counts of animal cruelty, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
A member of the community notified authorities about the poor condition of the horses, which led to an investigation conducted in part by the Colorado Humane Society, according to the sheriff’s office.
There were other horses on the property that appeared to be in suitable condition, so they were left, but the sheriff’s department will monitor the situation, according to the release.
“I want to remind everyone who owns horses or other animals that in these drought conditions you may have to cut your herds back,” said Sheriff Tom Nestor in the release. “I would rather you call for resources for animals you can’t afford to feed than have to come and remove them.”
