BOULDER, Colo.—Bolder Boulder officials are reviewing security for Colorado’s largest 10K race to make sure the May event is safe following a bombing at the Boston marathon.
Race director Cliff Bosley said Monday the Bolder Boulder contracts with hundreds of security officials for the race, including law enforcement officers from local agencies and security officers from a private company.
“First and foremost, our prayers are with those who were injured and killed. Safety and security of Bolder Boulder participants is a top concern,” Bosley said.
The Bolder Boulder is May 27. In recent years, the race has drawn more than 54,000 participants.
The security review was ordered after deadly bombs exploded Monday near the finish line at the Boston Marathon, the nation’s oldest race.
Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Boulder race organizers took extra security steps that are still in place today, including securing the perimeter at Folsom Stadium where the race finishes, according to the Boulder Daily Camera ( ).
Leading up to the race, organizers meet regularly with officials from the University of Colorado and the Boulder Police Department. Organizers declined to discuss other security measures that have been taken.
Boulder police Chief Mark Beckner said Monday that “it’s way too early” to talk about security changes at the race, but his department and race officials will be discussing additional security measures over the next few months.
