Denver police Officer Celena Hollis, who was killed last summer at a City Park jazz concert, will be among several police officers and detectives recognized this week for “actions they have taken to protect their fellow man,” the department said Wednesday.
Hollis will be posthumously awarded the Purple Heart during the Friday ceremony at the Brown Palace Hotel. She was rushing to break up a fight in the park on June 24 when Rollin Oliver fired several shots into a crowd of people, hitting her.
The police department said Hollis’ relatives will accept the award on her behalf.
Also among those slated to be honored is Detective Antonio Milow, who shot and killed a gunman during an April church service at New Destiny Christian Center in Aurora. Officers Derek Hancock and Tim Sullivan will receive accolades for capturing a group of would-be carjackers in 2011.
