Home prices in the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield metro area increased by 11.8 percent in April from April 2012, according to a report released Tuesday by

From March to April, area home prices increased by 2.6 percent.

Nationally, year-over-year price growth of 12.1 percent was the highest since February 2006, with 33 large metropolitan areas seeing double-digit increases, the report said.

The change represented the 14th consecutive monthly increase in home prices.

“House-price growth continue to surprise to the upside with an impressive 12.1 percent gain year over year in April,” Mark Fleming, chief economist for CoreLogic, said in a statement. “Increasing demand for new and existing homes, coupled with low inventory, has created a virtuous cycle for price gains, most clearly seen in the Western states with year-over-year gains of 20 percent or more.”

In Colorado, prices increased by 10.8 percent between April 2012 and April 2013, said the report, with a 2.6 percent gain from March to April.
