COLORADO SPRINGS — An El Paso County jury on Thursday convicted a Colorado Springs man of first-degree murder in the brutal death of a homeless man who was slain by repeated blows with a hatchet and dumped in a wooded ravine.
Jordan Rowland, who reportedly told a friend after the Aug. 16, 2011, killing that victim William C. Mickle “bit the blade,” will receive the only penalty available when he is sentenced this month: Life without parole.
The verdict marked the jury’s rejection of defense arguments that two other men actually carried out the killing and that Rowland, 21, played a minor role in the attack and only under the threat of death.
