BRIGHTON, Colo.—A Commerce City woman charged in the death of her 4-year-old grandson has been acquitted of first-degree murder but convicted of a lesser charge.

Jurors in Brighton convicted Becky Trujillo on Friday of criminally negligent child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury to Gabriel Trujillo in February 2012.

An autopsy found he died from head and neck injuries. Trujillo said he had fallen from a chair.

Her attorneys had suggested Gabriel may have had an undetected hematoma, which is a tumor-like mass of blood outside blood vessels, that may have led to the boy’s brain damage.

Trujillo was the boy’s legal guardian.

Sentencing is set for Aug. 2.
