We’re still a little surprised by the ‘ , because, you know, they don’t get along at all. The band canceled its entire tour last fall and went on indefinite hiatus. Despite all that, things are still moving forward for the Grammy award-winning band with “irreconcilable differences of ambition.” Today, Civil Wars released the upcoming album’s first single, “The One That Got Away.”

It’s a brooding piece from a band that clearly has some inner turmoil going on — in fact, knowing their story, you can hear the distance between Joy Williams and John White. Then there’s also the pretty telling lyrics, with Williams singing “I wish I had never seen your face.” Maybe they aren’t talking about each other, but either way it’s a little disturbing.

Listen to the new Civil Wars song below. The album is due out on Aug. 6 on Sensibility Music/Columbia Records.
