DENVER—Investigators are scouring the ground for the source of Colorado’s most destructive wildfire as firefighters put out the last of the blaze.

El Paso County sheriff Terry Maketa said Thursday that investigators are on their hands and knees using magnifying glasses to go over a 28-square-foot area in the Black Forest Fire. He said they have all but ruled out natural causes but wouldn’t release any other details.

Two people died in the fire, which destroyed over 500 homes.

Maketa said evacuations calls were made to the couple’s home phone but it’s not clear if they ever got the message.

They talked to others about leaving so Maketa doesn’t think it would have made a difference.

At least six other blazes are still active in the state.
