DENVER—The head of Colorado Parks and Wildlife is leaving state government to become a vice president of natural resources and conservation for Vail Resorts Inc.

Rick Cables took over Parks and Wildlife in 2011, when the state’s wildlife and parks divisions merged into one agency. Cables previously was the Rocky Mountain regional forester for the U.S. Forest Service. The Pueblo native was in charge of 22 million acres of federal land across five states.

In an email announcing his departure to state employees Tuesday, Cables said he had intended to stay three to five years or more when he joined Colorado Parks and Wildlife but that “circumstances change and opportunities come in different ways.”

Vail Resorts said Cables would oversee natural resource conservation efforts and help lead environmental programs.
