Who knew the monsoon season would still be with us in late July? Certainly not the folks behind Salt on the Rim, the ‘s summer fundraiser.
Chairwomen Lauren Cannon Davis and Leigh McMahon chose July 27 because they figured the heavy rains would be long gone and there’d be no need to worry about staging the margarita party on the patio at .
Mother Nature apparently didn’t get the memo because the festivities were barely underway when the heavens opened and rain came pouring down.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t just a quick shower. It rained well into the night.
Kempe supporters are a hardy bunch, though, and while a few called it a night early on, the majority of the 250 guests opted to make the best of a soggy situation by taking cover under a canopy that extended from the bar area while enjoying the guacamole, street tacos and that complemented the five specialty drinks entered in the evening’s Margarita Challenge.

So, who stuck it out?
For starters: Dr. Des Runyan, executive director of the Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect; Ren Cannon, chair of the Kempe Foundation board; and Andy Boian, the foundation board’s immediate past chair.
Also, stockbroker Paul Esserman with Mary Beth Goodspeed; Virginia Bray and hubby Lou Bindner; Jan Hammond; Don and Arlene Mohler Johnson; Bertha Haugen; Gail and George Johnson; and Jamie Wilkins, who won the evening’s grand prize: a three-day stay at the Ritz-Carlton Cancun.
Others supporting the cause were Kempe Foundation board member Walt Imhoff and Betsy Hogan; psychologist Toni Anker and attorney John Faught; Kristen and Dylan Geller; and Ken and Maria Mendelsberg with a group that included Brad and Gloria Blinder, Bethany Karulak, and her father, Charles Karulak, headmaster of in San Antonio.
