Interview with Valerie Bailey, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: I grew up in this business, in this community. My parents owned Sommers Appliance, a family-operated business in the mid-1980s. I’ve seen many changes in Aurora throughout the years. I met my husband through the business, and we began our own appliance business very close to the original location. Now our two sons are being raised in the business, and we hope they will find the same success we have, in continuing our family’s business into the future. We love Aurora and are here to stay!

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: We have heard many horror stories about buying used appliances. We value the trust our customers have in us, and we have very high standards. We are Better Business Bureau members and support them because we strive to set ourselves apart from unprofessional companies out there. We professionally recondition our appliances, and quality test and clean them before placing them on the floor. We frequently receive compliments on how clean they are.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: Being a small, family-owned business, our customers get personalized care and service unmatched by bigger stores. We have met some wonderful people over the years, and have made good friends and lifelong customers.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Getting the word out that we also buy your newer model appliances. Many people remodel or upgrade their appliances and give the old appliances to big box stores, where they are just thrown out. It’s such a waste because we can use them in whole or in part and can even pay for them. We are also proud to be the city of Aurora’s appliance recycler, so even if you have a junk appliance, we are certified for safe recycling and welcome you to use our free drop site.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: Not only do we sell reconditioned appliances, we have new appliances. We also sell parts for do-it-yourself projects and offer low-cost drop-off appliance repair.
