WESTMINSTER, Colo.—Police say a bus driver accused of driving drunk while transporting a Westminster high school football team had a blood-alcohol level almost three times the legal limit.
Passengers told authorities that 57-year-old Burton Carpenter was driving erratically during a 10-mile post-game ride on Sept. 21, and that he hit a parked truck when he arrived at Mountain Range High School.
KMGH-TV reported Thursday ( ) that police said a breath-test showed Carpenter’s blood-alcohol at .213.
Carpenter has been charged with 37 counts of child abuse involving reckless endangerment for each student passenger. He’s also been charged with careless driving, driving under the influence, and four counts of reckless endangerment for the coaches on the bus.
No one was injured on the trip.
Carpenter is jailed in Adams County on $4,000 bail.
