Since releasing its debut album, “A is for Alpine” in May, Australia’s has spent its year making the long jump from its home city of Melbourne to touring the United States. In early June, the indie-pop band played its first Colorado show at the Larimer Lounge and spent the afternoon recording a with us at .
Since forming in 2009, Alpine has opened up for , and is currently acting as support for (a tour that stops at Denver’s Ogden Theatre on Oct. 29). Smart pop melody writing and song structure and driving dancey beats, puts Alpine on par with its bigger tour-mates. But where TNAF and Empire of the Sun focus on power pop vocals and hooks, Alpine takes a more subtle approach with breathy, swirling vocals.
Alpine recorded three tracks from their debut for our Mile Marker session — “Gasoline,” “Hands” and “Villages.” With the vocals of Phoebe Baker and Lou James twirling around each other, “Gasoline” builds into a layered synth sing-along. The pulsing and gripping beat of “Hands” has the perfect feel of a track that should be in an Apple commercial. “Villages,” the mid-tempo and most contemplative of the three, has a more indie-rock ballad feel, with the addition of Baker and James’ cooing vocals.
