Interview with Wayne Pallas, certified personal trainer
How did you get involved in this business?
Several years ago, I was considering a change in careers, and as a lifelong athlete, personal training appealed to me. I wanted to offer affordable health and fitness programs so people could get fit without spending a fortune. And I am very aware of the specific needs of seniors. I recently started a senior fitness class that is specifically geared toward helping seniors regain mobility through low-intensity workouts. It’s rewarding to me to see the results.
What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
Unlike most trainers, I do not normally work at a gym, and I don’t need to use a lot of equipment. Most of the exercise routines I prescribe rely on body weight. As a result, I am able to train clients in the environment of their choice: their homes, a gym, outdoors — almost anywhere.
What do you like best about your line of work?
The one thing that excites me is when a client says something like, “Wayne, my leg doesn’t hurt anymore! Thanks for showing me that exercise.” Because of my approach, I like to be able to offer fitness programs at a fraction of what others charge so that money will not be an obstacle to improved health and fitness.
What is your business’ biggest challenge?
Many people are not familiar with functional training so I have to explain that I help my clients move better as opposed to building a lot of muscle. It’s very practical because functional training involves everyday movements like pushing, pulling and reaching, which apply to everyone no matter their fitness level. Functional training involves whole body movements, which means you get more out of your workout time and better overall results.
Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
In addition to having training certificates from three different organizations (NCSF, NASM and ACE), I have degrees in music and mathematics and a master’s degree in education. I have 35 years of experience as a public school teacher, which carries over into my personal training. My teaching experience enables me to adapt my approach to individual needs.
