Interview with Rachel Diller, NCMG, CFMG, owner
How did you get involved in this business?
I’ve been working with animals my whole life. I decided that I enjoy grooming far better than other aspects, so I moved forward with that industry. I’ve managed large boarding kennels and worked for other grooming salons prior to purchasing The Poodle Shop in 2005. I’ve grown that business within the community as a breeder and veterinarian-referred salon. I have worked closely with pet owners to create a bond with their pets. I decided that cats and dogs don’t mix too well (on that level) and that cats deserve spa days too.
What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
Opening Urban Sophisticats is completely distinguishable because we are the first and only one in the entire state to do so. Most groomers offer cat grooming or do it reluctantly. You can tell by their tone of voice and body language, they do it to make you (the client) happy. After speaking with many veterinarians and cat owners alike, this is a service the community has long awaited. Someone who was actually trained to work with cats, loves grooming them, has the natural ability to do so and will not be doing it around dogs. Could it be any better?
What do you like best about your line of work?
I love making my own schedule. Honestly. I am a busy woman. Besides the dog grooming spa and now my newly opened cat grooming spa, dirt biking, yoga and showing my mastiffs are high on my list of to-do’s. My clients (human) have always appreciated my time with their animals and allowed me my time to enjoy life so that I can always have joy in my work. I want the cats to enjoy this as much as they can and should. I know I bring a certain level of bonding to my clients and pets. One they sometimes cannot find in other shops. People are busy and tend to over look the little things. My clients know I put a little bit of myself into each grooming. I love my clients and their dogs. I want cat owners to feel the same way and know their pets are equally as cherished. It is definitely their time to shine.e!
What is your business’ biggest challenge?
I would say the biggest thing is convincing potential clients that their cat, full of ‘dingle-berries’, matted hair and shedding hair really don’t groom themselves. Sure, they lick. But guess what, that is all they are doing. I have yet to see a cat take a shower, use a comb to pull tangles out, decide what product will work the best to get rid of the greasy flakes in a safe manner, stand in front of a mirror and blow dry their hair. Nope, I’m still waiting. We can help. We are here to help. Also, it is a process. Cats (due to the nature of what their owners have come to believe) are usually tentative about water. The only cause? Never being exposed to it. Imagine a puppy getting a first bath. Same difference. We work with the cats, training them to accept the grooming process and then come to enjoy it. There is no need for sedation when you know your groomer can handle your cat. Most aggressive cats calm down in water. How many times has your groomer told you “never bathe your cat”. Quite silly actually. So, we are in the business of educating people, helping cats, taking care of the risky stuff and letting your connection be with your pet..
Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
I already have more than 250 cat clients, most are short hair due to shedding issues. Most of the cats I have shaved pelts off of are more than 15 years old, never been groomed before and do just great.
