COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A Colorado Springs man convicted in a 2003 arson fire that killed his three children is asking for a new trial.

Timothy Nicholls says he was poorly represented by his defense attorney in a trial in which he was convicted of murder. Prosecutors say the fire was part of a plot to collect on an insurance policy.

The victims included 11-year-old Jay, 5-year-old Sophia and 3-year-old Sierra Nicholls.

According to the Colorado Springs Gazette (), Deborah Nicholls, his wife at the time, was convicted of murder at a separate trial in 2008, and she is serving her life sentence.
