Interview with Raymond Brooks, owner
How did you get involved in this business?
I have always enjoyed woodworking as a hobby, and my dad (owner of Country Glass) had come to me and asked me if I could duplicate a rotten window sash to save his customer the cost of having to replace the entire window frame. I have since done hundreds of window sashes and window stops as a result.
What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
I think what sets me apart from others in this line of work is my willingness to do whatever it takes to complete a job and restore the existing product as opposed to saying I can’t do something or you need to replace the whole window frame (this could cost tens of thousands of dollars). I can and will find a way to bring new life to old or weak wood. Not just windows either, although windows frames do see the most weathering and neglect.
What do you like best about your line of work?
I like the people I’ve met and I love the challenge of bringing something back to its original beauty. It’s far more rewarding than tearing out perfectly good windows and frames and replacing them with new wood or vinyl windows. Anybody can do that.
What is your business’ biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge I face would have to be the height and terrain of some areas. When the topography doesn’t allow for ladders and the wood I’m working on is 40 feet from the ground, I have to have rope access work done from the roof in order to fulfill my promise made to restore a window sash.
Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
The cost of repairing is far less than they would think, especially when compared to total replacement.
