A Denver police officer opened fire on a driver who tried to run him over late Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. near 25th and Stout streets, Denver police reported via Twitter.

The officer attempted to make contact with the suspect while the man was on foot. The suspect ran from police to a car, which police believe was stolen, and tried to run the officer down, said Steve Warneke, police spokesman.

The officer fired an undisclosed number of times at the car. It is unclear if the suspect was hit. The suspect ditched the car in the area of 23rd Street and Court Place, which is where police have set a perimeter for search efforts, Warneke said.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
