Anti-gang activist Terrance Roberts, who is charged with in the shooting of a reputed gang member in September, waived his preliminary hearing on Thursday.

Roberts, 37, allegedly shot 22-year-old Hasan “Munch” Jones multiple times on the basketball courts of . Scores of people had Roberts helped to organize.

An arraignment hearing for Roberts was set for Jan. 27 in Denver District Court. He is also charged with first-degree assault and weapons possession by a previous offender.

Roberts remains free on a $100,000 bond.

Denver police officers say they overheard Roberts say he shot Jones because he was . Witnesses, however, told police that Roberts shot Jones at least five times.

Jones’ relatives were in the courtroom Thursday morning, but left before Roberts’ case was called.

Roberts arrived with several supporters, including his mentor, the Rev. Leon Kelly. Roberts told reporters after the brief hearing that he could not discuss his case.
