GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Gov. John Hickenlooper has appointed a former head of the Great Outdoors Colorado land conservation organization to lead a state effort to preserve the greater sage-grouse and fend off an endangered listing for the bird.
John Swartout says he agreed to coordinate state efforts to deal with sage-grouse because he hoped to find a way to preserve the birds and allow for the development of Western Slope economies.
According to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel ( ), the Bureau of Land Management is considering how to manage some 4 million acres in northwest Colorado to prevent an endangered listing of the greater sage-grouse by U.S. Fish and Wildlife.
