An estimated 1.3 million Americans on Saturday, after Congress failed to include an extension of the benefits in the two-year budget deal that passed before Congress adjourned.
President Obama and congressional Democrats are pushing for an immediate extension of the benefits. Republican House leaders have said they may be willing to negotiate, in exchange for spending cuts, while others in the GOP say extending the benefits won’t help the economy. The benefits program is estimated to cost about $25 billion a year.
