THORNTON, Colo.—Some residents of a Thornton apartment complex where a man was shot and killed by police say officers fired more than a dozen shots at him.

Police say 35-year-old Wesley Maldonado was shot after a chase that went from Thornton to Denver and back early Friday.

They say they were responding to a possible domestic violence incident where a gun was fired. Officers saw a vehicle leaving the area and they tried to stop it, starting the chase.

Many residents came outside in the meantime to see what was happening and some told The Denver Post ( ) that they thought the police response was excessive.

Police say Maldonado tried to intentionally collide with two patrol cars and appeared to point a firearm, causing four officers to fire their weapons.
