Race Street was closed east of Cheesman Park for hours Thursday as police investigated a report of shots fired.
Police said someone fired shots through the front door of a second-floor apartment north of the Botanic Gardens.
The incident began in mid-afternoon and police were still on the scene at 6 p.m. where they were waiting on a search warrant to enter the residence.
Police entered the residence around 8:30 p..m. where they found a deceased man, police reported on Twitter.
No additional details were released.
Streets around the area have since been reopened.
