When the Academy Awards air on Sunday, few people will have music on their mind. It’s Hollywood’s night. But we can’t forget that musicians are just as important to movies as the costume designers, lighting crew, or the folks who get coffee, hold things and deal with temper tantrums. Where would “There Will Be Blood” have been if it wasn’t for Jonny Greenwood’s soundtrack? What would the opening scene of “Apocalypse Now” been like without the Doors?

To celebrate music in movies, we put together this Oscars 2014 playlist, consisting of this year’s best song nominees and some of our favorite past winners.
