Bam! pow! free!
Swoop in to your local comic book store on May 3 for Free Comic Book Day. Every year, comic book shops give away comic books to anyone who comes into their store. Different shops have policies on how many free comics you receive, but you will get at least one free comic just for stopping in to a participating location. Our “X-ray vision” spotted participating shops across the metro area. Be sure to verify store hours (some may open at midnight), before flying off. Some shops also have family-friendly activities planned.
Dig this
Denver residents can get their hands dirty with free mulch — ground wood chips from Christmas trees, on May 3 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., while supplies last. Dig-your-own sites are: Veterans Park (East Iowa Avenue and South Vine Stree), Bear Creek Park (south of West Dartmouth Avenue on South Raleigh Street), Sloan’s Lake Park (Sheridan Boulevard and West 17th Avenue.) and Fred Thomas Park (Quebec Street and East 26th Avenue.). Bring a snow shovel to speed the task. Need low-cost compost for your garden? Havana Nursery (10450 Smith Road) sells compost for $3.50 per 1.25 cubic ft. bag (that’s about 9 gallons) or $30 per cubic yard. Limit 20 compost bags per vehicle. 720-865-6810.
Waste not
Is your family all about conserving resources and saving money? If so, head to Arvada’s Wolff Park (8475 W. 57th Ave.) on May 3 for the Sustain Arvada Festival. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., learn how to recycle, reclaim, repurpose, reuse, reduce waste, conserve resources and save money. See the latest in solar technology, conservation, unique recycled items, locally grown plants, low-cost transportation and more. The free festival features family-friendly activities, along with great food, music and more. Attendees are encouraged to ride their bike, walk, take the bus or carpool. A secured bike valet area will be available.
Cast away
Adults always have a good story about the one that got away. Now young anglers can learn how to reel in the big one at Broomfield Open Space Foundation’s free Kids Fishing Derby on May 3. Three hour-long sessions are scheduled at 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. at Tom Frost Reservoir (Midway & Lowell), each offering a brief introductory lesson. Poles and bait will be provided. All kids must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and registration is required. For more information and to register, call 303-460-6901.
