have given the animated treatment to the new song “When the People Cheer.” The Joe Baughman-directed video features a literal interpretation of the songs rhymes from Greg Porn and Black Thought.
The visuals are intricate and brilliant, with each piece building on another as the verses flow. The Roots are known for their rap mysticism and Baughman’s creation fits the bill with perfection.
Due out on May 19, “…and then you shoot your cousin” has been deemed a concept album but we haven’t had too much to go on beyond this first track. Baughman creates a Claymation version of Black Thought who swims in a locker of Apple Jacks while the MC’s warm tones spit his rather gruff verses.
Earlier this week the band released “Tomorrow,” a track featuring Raheem DeVaughn that has more stripped down piano instrumentation but the same pained and enigmatic lyrics.
