5) Potty Mouth, Perfect Pussy — May 19, Hi-Dive
There’s something juvenile, satisfying and purely punk rock about a co-headlining bill of Potty Mouth and Perfect Pussy. The two fresh garage and punk acts will cut through Denver, leaving a wake of insulted adults, ringing ears and mosh pit-induced bruises. , the softer of the two, is a female-fronted garage rock act out of Massachusetts that released its Weezer-inspired debut late last year. Perfect Pussy is a punk act out of Syracuse, N.Y. that is fronted by the raw power of vocalist Meredith Graves. The band released its excellent first album, “Say Yes to Love,” this year on Captured Tracks. The band’s play the with Denver’s Colfax Speed Queen on May 19. ($10, hi-dive.com)
4) Sunboy — May 17, Larimer Lounge
New Denver psych-pop act Sunboy appeared on the scene last year with the fascinating and makeshift stop-motion video for “Highway Screamin’.” A dreamy summer day lost in a synth haze and a jaunty beat, the song and accompanying video quickly defined the band as one to watch for. Now, Sunboy will headline the on May 17 after playing opening spots on a few notable bills in the subsequent months. With a knack for hazy melodies and an affinity for tie-dye projectors, Sunboy joins the new age of psych music that has been made popular by Tame Impala and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Wild High, Thanks for Everything and Male Blonding open the show. ($10, larimerlounge.com)
3) Lana Del Rey — May 19, Red Rocks
Leave it to to make her Colorado debut in the most Lana Del Rey way possible. The singer has always had panache in her short, bright career — especially when it comes to dominating headlines and conversation. And so it should only make sense that she’ll play her first Colorado show by headlining the legendary on May 19. Del Rey’s 2012 album “Born to Die” dominated sales, becoming the fifth-best-selling album that year thanks to her somber, delightfully creepy persona. This year, she’s prepping the release of her new album, “Ultraviolence.”
2) Haim — May 21, Ogden Theatre
This is return to Colorado after playing its first show outside of L.A. at the in 2010. Since that show opening for Julian Casablancas, the band has blown up, and now with their debut album destroying the charts, Haim is taking the stage at the same venue. But this time Haim is the headliner and their show has been sold out for weeks. ahead of the Denver appearance about local indie-pop duo Tennis, who is touring with the band and opening a number of sold out shows. Haim plays the Ogden Theatre with Tennis on May 21.
1) Morrissey — May 17, Ellie Caulkins Opera House
Cross your fingers, conduct witchcraft or voodoo or pray to any sort of all-powerful being of your choosing that this actually happens. Colorado fans have been waiting nearly two years for the ex-Smiths singer to play this show. If you want the long, dramatic details of what happened during those two years, If all goes according to plan, Denver will get to see Morrissey perform the classics, along with some new material from his upcoming album at on May 17.
