Interview with Kim and Laurie Haarberg, owners

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: When the opportunity to invest in Colorado Saddlery came up, it really got our attention. Here was a brand we knew and trusted, and that both of us felt was worth preserving. As we got to know more about the company, we became passionate about what this historic Colorado company stood for: the attention to detail in the fine craftsmanship of the saddles, the emphasis on providing the highest quality tack and equestrian supplies, as well as the personal connection that the company has with its customers. At the same time, we saw an opportunity to bring our business experience to a company that hadn’t fully updated its systems to keep up with the times.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: Colorado Saddlery really is a leader in the equestrian world. We have several patented items including the “Natural Ride” saddle, and we are one of the few companies in our industry to manufacture a specialty spur in the United States that’s supperior in quality to those made abroad.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: We like helping other horse lovers — whether they are recreational pleasure riders, first-time horse owners or professional working cowboys. Even though we do a lot of business online and through dealers, we still have people come into the store and look through the bins of tack, just like they did when they were kids. We get calls from people who just need advice on how to properly use and maintain their equipment. I guess you could say we pride ourselves on making personal connections to our customers, and being a part of the equestrian community. It’s our passion.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: We see a lot of potential in using technology to bring our business systems up to date and better communicate with our customers. At the same time, we are sensitive to maintaining our tradition of quality crafsmanship and personal service that the company is known for. It’s a fine balance.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: At one time, Colorado was known as a hub for manufacturing Western saddles for working cowboys who had to be in the saddle all day doing maneuvers that required more stability. We are one of the last holdouts in that industry. Several of our employees have been with the company for decades. Bill Robinson, Dave Sandoval and Manuel Montoya have more than 100 years’ combined experience with the Colorado Saddlery Co. In addition, Brian Van Scoyk, grandson of the founder, is proud to be a third generation to work at the company. These are individuals who learned from the best and today are considered the go-to experts in our field.
