Janet’s Camp, the annual fundraiser, is a deluxe experience where there’s no need to pitch a tent or cook dinner over a camp fire.
Janet Elway’s annual fundraiser for the is held on the grounds of one of the city’s most fabulous homes — this year, jeweler Tom Shane was the host — and includes amenities you just don’t find in your everyday campground.
Such as: bartenders pouring pineapple-infused martinis and margaritas, and staff from tending food stations stocked with several varieties of pizza, street tacos, quinoa and Caesar salads, and a build-your-own ice cream sundae bar.
Add music by ; miniature golf and other games; a face-painting booth; a tarot card reader; and an auction called by .
It’s an evening that raises enough money to send 350 inner-city kids to YMCA day camp this summer.
The YMCA of Metropolitan Denver will celebrate its 140th year in 2015, but “Until Janet’s Camp, we had never had an event of this significance,” noted president/chief executive officer Jim Hiner. He also pointed out that $1.2 million has been raised since the first Janet’s Camp in 2006, enabling 2,850 kids from low-income families to attend YMCA summer day camps.
Elway and co-chair Jane Buckley welcomed a crowd of 300, folks that included Bruce Glazer, executive vice president and chief financial officer for , and his wife, Wendy; Karel Horney, executive director of , with husband Bob and son Adam; Quinn Washington; Kelsey and Tiffany Shane; banker Vince Abrue; Jean and Dr. Ben Galloway; David Alexander; Ken Koontz; auction chair Megan Dietz; Matt and Lindsay Valdez; Adam Daurio, executive director of the ; Rich and Maggie Caschette; Lisa Holste, owner of ; and anchor Kim Christiansen, the evening’s mistress of ceremonies.
