Interview with David Gordon, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: My introduction to CrossFit was definitely a memorable one. I was a firefighter for Littleton Fire Department and some of my co-workers asked me to do a CrossFit workout with them. It was by far the hardest workout I had ever done, and it gave me so much more than just a sweaty t-shirt and sore muscles. It gave me a whole new outlook on what fitness really is. From there I went on to get my level one certification in CrossFit, as well as other CrossFit certifications. I have also participated in several Olympic lifting seminars. I decided that I wanted to open up my own box. From there, CrossFit South Aurora was born.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: Every person has a special place where they know they can go to feel at home, where they always feel happy and confident when they are there. One of our biggest goals is to be one of those places in our clients’ lives. We set out to create personal relationships with all of our clients, and I truly believe this is the key for keeping longterm members. Another thing we pride ourselves on is our programming. My goal is to not only push people to their limits, but also to create something that will benefit every person in our gym. We tailor workouts to fit our clients’ needs all the time, because we truly believe that anyone can do CrossFit.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: There are so many things that I love about owning my own CrossFit gym, but I think my favorite part is helping people and seeing people meet their goals. Every person that walks through our doors has some kind of goal for themselves. whether it is to lose weight, get their first pull-up, increase their max lifts, or to simply just finish an entire workout. There is nothing I enjoy more than working one-on-one with people and giving them the tools they need to meet their challenges. Even better is seeing people’s reactions when they reach the goals they have been working so hard towards. These moments are priceless.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: I think the biggest challenge for our CrossFit gym is simply standing out among the others. CrossFit has expanded so much in the last few years, which is a great thing, but it also means that CrossFit gyms are popping up everywhere. There are quite a few gyms that are very close in proximity to ours, so it is more important than ever to create an experience for clients that really stands out as exceptional.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: I think one of the most surprising things about our gym is that we were the first gym to open in Aurora.
