A vehicle has crashed into Skylark Lounge, the South Broadway venue, which is scheduled to host a number of Underground Music Showcase performances on Friday night, according to reports. As of 4:30 p.m. UMS organizers did not know if the venue would hold concerts on Friday.
“Stay tuned as to if there will be shows there or not,” said UMS Director Kendall Smith. “We’re waiting to hear if the Skylark will be open.”
While Smith didn’t have a time frame for when they would know if they Skylark would be open, he said the fire department was inspecting the entry and the structure of the building.
Denver Fire Department chief Steve Maddock said he did not know what caused the accident, but that two cars were involved in a collision.
At least one person was injured and taken to a hospital, Maddock added.
“I almost died,” said bartender Suzi Miller, who was working at Skylark when the crash occurred. “My belly is full of vomiting butterflies.”
Miller said she was talking to a customer about accidents occurring near the busy intersection when she heard tires screeching.
She walked outside Skylark to see a sedan rushing toward the building’s front doors, at the corner of Broadway and Maple.
She and a customer moved out of the way before the car slammed into the front of the building, bouncing back about five feet, she said. The picture windows that flank the entrance buckled, and debris was littered on the sidewalk, Miller added.
Responders received the call at 3:57 p.m., and we’re checking Skylark for minimal structural damage shortly afterward.
The blue Honda was towed from the intersection of Broadway and Maple at approximately 5 p.m.
“We need a stoplight at Maple and Broadway,” Gwenn Locano, another Skylark bartender, added.
Scott Heron, the owner, was sweeping the debris off the sidewalk shortly before 6 p.m., when the first UMS concert of the night was supposed to kick off.
“It’ll be just fine,” Heron said, thinking the structural damage would just be “cosmetic.”
Heron said the fire department had called the city building inspector to give Skylark a final pass and OK it for the night.
But he said if worse came to worst, he was going to have business come and go from the side door, as the front doors don’t fully open and close.
Denver police officers on the scene did not have additional information about the accident or any other injuries.
