Interview with Kerry Swanson, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: With a bachelor of fine arts in interior design, background in retail and a passion for the unloved castoffs of the world, a resale shop seemed like a good fit.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Rewind is a lifestyle resale boutique. We sell a little bit of everything — clothing, decor, furnishings, antiques. If it’s vintage, upscale, shabby, fashionable, rustic or just plain different we will probably take it. The items are displayed creatively in various themed rooms.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: I love finding homes for all of the discarded items that come into the shop — the clothes that were outgrown, the old Victrola that has been sitting in someone’s barn for years, the jewelry that belonged to someone’s great aunt that just isn’t their style but is too nice to just donate. We also have a lot of items that are upcycled or reworked and given new life.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Rejecting items that won’t work in my shop. The shop is constantly getting a continuous flow of items for consignment, so I have to limit what I take to items that really speak to me and that are a good fit for the shop. I never want to hurt anyone’s feelings because I know what they are bringing in meant something to them at one time.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: That we also have a mobile shop, the Rewind Roadshow (roving resale shop), and it is one of just a handful like it in the country. Coming to a town near you!
