A Pueblo woman wanted for allegedly shooting at an off-duty police officer was found dead Tuesday in the trunk of a car after having apparently killed herself.

Authorities say she shot herself.

Christina Furber, 26, was found after an overnight manhunt in Pueblo West that, according to , left several schools on a delayed opening. Furber was being sought on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder of a peace officer.

Furber’s body was found by a man inside his garage on the 1000 block of Shenandoah Drive. The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office said it appears Furber broke into the man’s home and car before killing herself.

About 10 p.m. Monday, an off-duty Pueblo police officer — still in uniform but riding in an unmarked car — was following a vehicle driving “erratically” on the 1000 block of Wild Wind Place, the sheriff’s office said.

The officer attempted to contact the sheriff’s office but “was unable to get the correct channel.”

The officer made contact with Furber, the driver of the vehicle, and a struggle ensued, at which point Furber pulled out “a large caliber revolver from her purse and fired at the officer,” the sheriff’s office said.

The officer returned fire before the suspect fled on foot, according to the sheriff’s office. The officer was not shot, and authorities believe Furber was not injured either.

SWAT officers and a canine search team were among the law enforcement who flooded the area in search of Furber. Residents were told to stay inside during the search and to report anyone suspicious.

The sheriff’s office was continuing to investigate the incident, said Charlene Graham, the bureau chief for law enforcement.
