Police in Cañon City say that a home explosion last week was caused by a man attempting to commit suicide.
Officers and firefighters were called Sept. 4 to a home on the 1500 block of Woodlawn Ave. to reports of an explosion, finding a residence there fully engulfed in flames and totally destroyed.
A man in his mid-thirties was found inside the home and taken to St. Thomas More Hospital with burn injuries, police said.
“Detectives have been able to confirm the lone occupant of the home was attempting to commit suicide,” police said in a news release. “Detectives also determined the explosion was a direct result of an air/natural gas detonation.”
Police said detectives are working with the county’s district attorney’s office to determine if charges will be filed.
