Did Wilin Rosario’s home run come back down to earth yet?
You know, the two-run, walk-off rocket he launched off Diamondbacks closer Addison Reed Thursday night that gave the
Rosario’s moonshot traveled 447 feet and landed on the concourse beyond the left field bleachers. It was the second walk-off hit, but the first walk-off homer of The Bull’s career.
“I hit it really good. I knew the ball was going to fly,” Rosario said. “I got the pitch up in the zone and I do my thing.”
It was his 12th homer of the season, but this was one extra-special. Not only because he won the game, but because he hit a slider — and hanging slider to be sure — but still a slider. That pitch has been his Achilles’ heel this season.
“That’s as big as it gets right there,” manager Walt Weiss said. “Good for Wilin.”
I’ve been pretty critical or Rosario this season, especially in a column last month in which I still believe that, but it was good to see Rosario shine Thursday night.
“He’s fought through a challenging year, but he’s worked hard and he’s got a great attitude. He brings positive energy every day,” Weiss said. “He’s been grinding through a tough year. It happens to just about everybody in this league. He’s showing up well now.”
Rosario is riding a season-high six-game hitting streak and finished the night going 4-for-5 with a double, his homer and three RBIs. During his six-game streak, he has gone 12-for-25 with three doubles, two home runs, eight RBIs and four runs scored.
Late-night notes of note:
* The Rockies are a horrific 20-55 on the road, but they are starting to dominate at Coors Field. They are 3-1 on the current homestand — their last of the 2014 season — and are 10-2 over their last 12 home games.
* Michael Cuddyer, showing a lot of folks around baseball that he still has plenty left to give, hit his eighth homer — a solo shot to right-center in the second inning. He finished the night 3-for-5 with a double, home run, an RBI and three runs scored. He’s hitting .327.
* The Diamondbacks, now tied with the Rockies for last place in the NL West, are 3-10 over their last 13 games. They are mirroring the Rockies, going 9-22 (2-15 on the road) since Aug. 16.
