Foothills Animal Shelter in Golden has received a $50,000 grant in a national animal rescue competition.

The ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge asked 50 participating shelters to find more homes for animals in June, July and August of 2014 than they did over the same period in 2013, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said in a news release Tuesday.

Foothills placed 2,664 pets this summer, an increase of 1,006 over 2013. The Golden animal shelter won in Division 4, where participants annually take in 7,001-11,000 animals.

“We watched Foothills Animal Shelter rise to the top of the leaderboard month after month this summer, demonstrating their amazing determination and commitment to improving things for animals in their community,” Bert Troughton, vice president of strategic initiatives for the ASPCA, said in a statement.

“We are beyond thrilled with the official results from the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge!” the on Tuesday. “For us, saving lives was the real win, but having the ASPCA onsite to give us a $50,000 check was icing on the cake!”

Foothills came in fourth overall among the 50 competitors and won its division each of the three months.
