Interview with Jim Lase, assistant manager
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I’ve known the family since 1970, and after leaving the teaching field, working in different businesses, I was asked to join the staff. I’ve been here 15 years.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: We have knowledgeable people in all areas — band, orchestra, guitar, pro audio, music. Our repair turnaround time is quick and affordable. We have been family-owned for 54 years.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: I enjoy working with students in the store when they have questions or struggle playing their instrument, watching new students’ faces when they pick up their first instrument, helping them create their first sounds.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Our biggest challenge is competing with internet sales. We see many instruments whose quality is not the same as our products. It is a challenge, sometimes, to repair them.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: The original owners are still active in the business. Some employees have worked here for over 30 years. Personally, I spent eight years selling and repairing vacuum cleaners.
