Even after a blowout loss at Minnesota-Duluth on Saturday, the University of Denver hockey team jumped up in the national rankings this week. The Pioneers’ stock continues to rise.
But with No. 5 Boston College coming to town this weekend, 11th-ranked Denver isn’t ready to forget about its first loss of the season.
“We all know that’s not good enough,” Denver senior defenseman Joey LaLeggia said Tuesday after the Pioneers’ practice. “We could tell the intensity really wasn’t there.”
DU (3-1) downed Duluth on Friday, 3-1, but fell to the Bulldogs (3-3) on Saturday, 6-1. In that game, LaLeggia earned a game misconduct penalty in the second period and Duluth used a power-play goal to break the game open.
“I can’t take that penalty,” LaLeggia said.
Coming off a loss, Denver moved up two spots in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll and remained at No. 11 in the poll. The Pioneers will host national-power Boston College for a two-game series starting Friday at Magness Arena.
“I thought we imploded because we were tired mentally,” DU coach Jim Montgomery said of the Duluth loss. “We’ve worked on it. I don’t know if it’s remedied.”
