Beaver Creek — It won’t be long now: Only 62 days.

The world’s best male ski racers are in Beaver Creek for World Cup races this weekend, but when they race they also will be thinking of the world championships here Feb. 2-15.

The finish area grandstand is far bigger than it normally is for the annual World Cup races here, and there is a massive glass-enclosed VIP area nearby.

The finish area grandstand at Beaver Creek is far bigger than it normally is for World Cup races.

This will be Beaver Creek’s third time hosting the world championships, an event on par with the Olympics which happen every other year in ski racing. Vail previously hosted very successful world championships in 1989 and 1999. The world championships have been held in the U.S. only one other time — Aspen in 1950.

This week the men are racing downhill (Friday), super-G (Saturday) and giant slalom (Sunday). Tuesday through Thursday is downhill training, which they will use to familiarize themselves with the course in full-on race conditions. Training begins at 11 a.m.
